Biossance Squalane Oil Review

What is Squalane?

The main ingredient of Biossance products, squalane oil, has answered my skin’s prayers. It moisturizes skin, retains moisture, & balances oil production. Squalane oil is nothing new. Your skin already produces its own kind, squalene, but produces less as you age. Click here for more information on squalane.

Why Biossance?

There are plenty of companies that sell squalane, so why choose Biossance?

This company engineered a sustainable, 100% plant-based form of squalane using sugarcane. Compared to squalane’s main sources: shark liver and olives, I’d say Biossance hit the jackpot. I’m sure you understand why Biossance avoids harvesting squalane from shark livers, but why avoid olives?

Here’s their answer: “The quality of squalane produced depends on weather and crop growth, and can be unreliable” using olives.

Think of your favorite beauty product. Now imagine how you’d feel if they stopped selling it. Nothing’s worse than saying goodbye to your favorite beauty product forever, especially if it’s a vital part of your skincare routine! Using sugarcane, Biossance can continue to make squalane goodness for years to come.

Why Oil?

I can write a series of blog posts on why I prefer oil over serums, creams, lotions, etc. And I probably will. But for now, I’ll keep it short. Certain oils, such as squalane and jojoba oil, are similar to the components of sebum (your skin’s natural oils). Your skin easily absorbs these oils, retaining moisture.

Squalane and jojoba oil also help decrease oil production. Putting more oil on your face to decrease oil production seems counterintuitive. But since squalane and jojoba oil are similar to sebum, they trick your skin into thinking it has enough sebum, leading to decreased oil production.

I understand how scary it is to jump from “oil-free” products to literally smothering your face with oil. For years, the beauty industry convinced us that oil will only result in breakouts. Beauty oils on the market today prove these claims are far from the truth. Trust me when I say that oil cleanser, moisturizer, AND acne treatment are the only natural skincare products that calmed & balanced my highly sensitive, acne-prone, combination skin.

Biossance Squalane Oil Review - Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil

Biossance Squalane Oil + Vitamin C Rose Oil vs OLEHENRIKSEN Truth Serum

I have dark spots & acne scars from years of sensitive skin & inflamed acne. The only product that helped before Biossance was OLEHENRIKSEN Truth Serum (it’s still a bestselling product for dark spots at Sephora–see below). Both contain Vitamin C, which brightens and evens skin tone.

OLEHENRIKSEN Truth Serum

Pros:

  • Quickly cleared up dark spots & acne scars
  • Evened skin tone
  • Moisturizing & retained moisture
  • Absorbed quickly
  • Serum felt refreshing when applied
  • Smooth makeup application on top

Cons:

  • Serum became sticky and created an oil slick as the day went on
  • Difficult to layer with other skincare products
  • Costly ($48 for 1 oz)

Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil

Pros:

  • Quickly lightened dark spots & acne scars
  • Evened skin tone
  • Moisturizing & retained moisture
  • Absorbed quickly
  • Balanced oil production
  • Smooth makeup application on top
  • Easily layered with other oil products
  • Free deluxe sample on www.biossance.com (just pay $5 for S&H)

Cons:

  • Left a few stubborn dark spots
  • More costly ($72 for 1 oz)

OLEHENRIKSEN Truth Serum - Bestselling Product at Sephora

The best-selling products for dark spots at Sephora include serums like OLEHENRIKSEN Truth Serum and/or contain harsh ingredients, such as retinoids, glycolic, or lactic acid. I use products with these ingredients only if they contain smaller amounts, such as my favorite exfoliating pads: First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads. I prefer physical exfoliants (my favorite face scrub: Acure Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub) over oils/serums to even out my skin tone. The less product build-up, the more my skin can breathe & the easier it is to apply makeup on top!

Biossance uses Vitamin C Rose Oil to brighten dark spots gently while moisturizing skin. I have combination skin (oily T-zone & dry spots on my forehead & cheeks), and this product balances my skin’s oil production and retains moisture all day. It also evened my skin’s texture, and I no longer have dry spots! I can easily apply makeup now, and I don’t have to worry about my face getting oily or dry throughout the day.

Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil appears more expensive, but you only need 3 drops for every application. With OLEHENRIKSEN Truth Serum, I needed a pump twice a day to cover my face, so I had to replace this product often. I’ve been using 3 drops twice a day (AM + PM) of my Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil for the past 4 months, and I still have a quarter of the bottle left!

Biossance Squalane Oil Review - Biossance Squalane Antioxidant Cleansing Oil

Biossance Squalane Oil + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil vs Jojoba Oil

I used jojoba oil as the only product in my cleansing routine for 3 years before I found Biossance. Now I double cleanse with Biossance Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil for makeup removal then use Youth to The People Kale + Green Tea Spinach Vitamins Age Prevention Cleanser for skin cleansing (a foamy cleanser with no drying/irritating sulfates).

Jojoba Oil

Pros:

  • Removed makeup
  • More affordable ($16 for 4 oz)

Cons:

  • Clogged up sink & left an oil film on the sink/bathtub surface
  • Not easily washed off (unless you do the oil cleansing method, using a warm towel to wipe excess oil–I found this too abrasive for my skin, so I splashed water on my face & pat my skin dry with a towel instead)
  • Due to residual oil on the face, difficult to double cleanse with a skin cleanser after

Biossance Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil

Pros:

  • Removed makeup
  • Easily washed off–turns into a milky solution when in contact with water
  • Perfect for double cleansing with a skin cleanser after
  • Affordable ($30 for 6.7 oz–lasts a long time, only need 1/2 a pump for makeup removal)

No Cons!

Tip: Apply Biossance Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil with dry hands on a dry face. This keeps the product in oil form to effectively break down makeup. Once you rub it all over your face, apply water & the milky solution easily washes off!

Biossance Squalane Oil Review - Biossance Squalane

Biossance Squalane Oil vs Jojoba Oil

I used jojoba oil to moisturize my face & hair as well as cleanse for 3 years. For the past 4 months, I’ve been using Biossance Squalane Oil as my face & hair moisturizer instead, and I love it!

Jojoba Oil

Pros:

  • Moisturizing
  • Smooth makeup application on top
  • Easily layered with other oil products
  • Affordable ($16 for 4 oz)

Cons:

  • Didn’t retain moisture well
  • Took 15 minutes to absorb into skin

Biossance Squalane Oil

Pros:

  • Moisturizing & retained moisture
  • Absorbed quickly
  • Smooth makeup application on top
  • Easily layered with other oil products
  • Free deluxe sample on www.biossance.com (just pay $5 for S&H)

Cons:

  • Costly ($58 for 3.3 oz)

Since I use Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil, I only apply 2 drops twice a day of Biossance Squalane Oil on spots that need extra care (around my nose, mouth, and eyes). I also apply 2 drops to wet hair–a little goes a long way. If you apply too much, it will make your hair look oily! Also, focus on applying it to your ends instead of near your scalp to avoid oil slicks.
