I’ve received so many questions from friends, family, and even my Instagram community after they watched our proposal video. Since we shared our special moment with the internet, it’s only fair to share the details leading up to it.
I answered the most-asked questions about the proposal. Hope you enjoy!
1. Did you know it was going to happen?
I had some clues, but I wasn’t sure.
Vinson and I have been together for 6 years by that time, so we already talked about marriage. He knew my 3 requirements for the proposal
- My nails need to be done
- Our parents must be present
- A photographer has to catch the moment
2. What clues did you have?
The first clue came 2 weeks before the big proposal.
My sorority big texted me, asking if I wanted to get my nails done. She said she needed to get hers done for a wedding coming up, and she hates going to nail salons so it would be better if I came with her. It wasn’t out of character for her, so I believed it. She even offered to pay for me (like the generous big sister she is).
The problem was that it was finals week for me. And to her
So I recommended my favorite spa. It would be the same cost as paying for both of our manicures, and she’d get to relax in a massage chair.
She insisted that we take the time to bond, so her suspicious pushback gave me the first clue. I knew Vinson was visiting Florida in 2 weeks for Thanksgiving. But I played along, mostly because I didn’t want to get my hopes up too high.
The second clue came when I was packing for Tampa. He told me to bring nice clothes for Thanksgiving and Sunday with our parents.
I asked him why I can’t dress down for lunch on Sunday like I always do. He said my mom would love a nice photo of us all since it’s rare for us to all be together. I couldn’t argue with that.
3. How did he prepare for the big surprise?
Vinson made 3 smart moves in preparation for the proposal:
- My parents didn’t know it was going to happen that weekend.
- Vinson told me he was going to help his dad fix his shed. He even made up a half-true story with technical lingo about “problems” they were running into that I would never question.
- Vinson acted calm & cool when he was around me.
That last one really bothered me because I was looking to see if he was anxious or nervous. Unfortunately, there were no dead giveaways.
4. What happened the morning of the proposal?
To Vinson’s dismay, my parents left at 3 AM from Miami to arrive in Tampa at 7 AM. They knew how horrible traffic was the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so they wanted to avoid it at all costs.
That meant Vinson and his dad had to get up at 6 AM to “work on the shed” before my parents got there. When I woke up, Vinson was gone and my dress was ironed.
I wasn’t any happier to wake up at 7 AM and put on a full face of makeup. When I walked out of the bathroom, my mom said in awe, “You look so beautiful.” I found out later that Vinson’s mom told my parents about the proposal, so they wouldn’t be confused when we headed to the beach.
5. When did you know the proposal was happening?
I felt like the drive was oddly long, but I didn’t know for sure until we parked at the beach. Thankfully, I knew by the time we left the car because someone selling flowers in the parking lot asked, “Are you here for the engagement?”
My future mother-in-law was shocked and tried to cover it up. I felt so bad for her! Honestly, who asks that kind of thing and ruins the surprise?! All I’m saying is that person’s lucky I already had a feeling…
6. How did you react?
It was surreal walking towards him. We’ve been talking about this moment for years. How it would happen, when it would happen, and who would be there.
When he got on one knee, I couldn’t help but laugh because he’s gotten on his knee as a joke so many times–he knew that I would never allow him to propose to me in my pajamas. I couldn’t believe that this time was real.
To my surprise, Vinson went BIG and hired my sorority sister & his fraternity brother (J&S Media) to catch the moment with a video of the whole thing. I only required a photographer at the proposal, and this was the best grand gesture he could’ve made.
After the proposal, we drank champagne with our parents and Vinson’s uncle. Then we had a photoshoot on that unbelievably gorgeous day. It was a true miracle how clear the sky was because it stormed the day before and after.
We continued the celebration with dim sum then a buffet–very typical of us to surround ourselves with loved ones and food on our big day.
7. Okay, but when is the wedding?
We’re planning to have a 2-year engagement and be married by 2021. This all depends on where my pharmacy career takes me after I graduate in 2020. The most I committed to an actual date is that I set my Erin Condren wedding planner to end in May 2021!

About Modern Wedding by Kelsey McKinnon
The secret to planning a deeply personal and meaningful wedding has nothing to do with budget. It’s about creating a celebration that reflects a couple’s core values. Translating those values is the work of Modern Wedding, an information-filled guide with hundreds of creative ideas and beautiful, inspiring photographs for readers to look at and say, “This feels like us.”
The book unpacks every element of a wedding—stationery, attire, seating plans, flowers and tablescapes, food and drink, gifts—with examples that will appeal to couples who care about how things are made but are not overly influenced by trends. The emphasis is on natural surroundings, seasonal flowers and food, modern dresses, minimalist ceremony structures, and naked cakes. Photographs of real weddings—“case studies” like a destination fete in Tuscany, a house party in Brooklyn, and a New Agey revel in Kauai—show how all the pieces can come together into a unique and expressive whole. Extensive practical information and resources give readers access to all the help they need for their own unique celebration.
